Tyde Music: Making Waves With Wood and Sound
The Lake Tahoe luthier’s shop is artfully stocked with the perfect combination of tools, wood shavings and raw materials, showcasing the talents of two local pioneers. Tyler Joersz and Devin Price have a passion for woodworking and Ukuleles—together they are Tyde Music. Founded in 2012, Joersz and Price have been moving beyond the boundaries of traditional instrument making. “We push the limits of our craft by using unconventional woods,” Price said. Using varieties such a reclaimed Cedar and Mahogany from retired piers around the lake, Joersz and Price take pride in contributing their instruments to artists who carry messages of positivity and vibrations of unity in their music.
Joersz, whose luthier blood runs in the family, is passionate about creating one-of-a kind instruments and delivering them into artist’s hands. “The artists are the ones pushing music and lyrics and I love seeing them on-stage with one of our instruments in their element,” Joersz said. In addition to their first love, Tyde music also makes cajon drums, didgeridoos, stomp boxes and other music accessories. Some of the lucky musicians endorsed by Tyde are Mike Love from Oahu, Bobby Alu from Australia and local artist and musician Chad Wilkins.
You can find Tyde Music’s Ukuleles and other instruments at different festivals in California, Truckee Thursdays, and online. Producing approximately 40 ukuleles a year, prices range from 600 to 10,000 dollars, depending on the time invested in their creation. In the future they are hoping to branch out into retirement communities and Tahoe hubs and pubs so that more people can experience the magic of their musical gems by playing the instruments themselves. Joersz and Price believe the beauty of the ukulele is that anyone can learn to play. It’s an easy instrument to connect with, and whether you’re a child just learning, or you have old crooked fingers, the Ukulele is for everyone. “Music connects people,” Price said. “With more music and there will be more positivity being put into the universe, and we all need that.”
